The Nissan/Bose system in the new Maxima is the first Bose system available in a modestly sized and priced car. Bose improved its 4.5-inch speakers in the front doors and developed a new generation of high-quality amplifiers about the size of a matchbook to drive them. The new Cadillac Gold system increases the power to 200 watts and enlarges the rear speakers to 6 x 9 inches from 4.5 inches in diameter. So to keep ahead of the competition, GM upped the ante and introduced the Delco/Bose ''Gold'' system in selected models of Cadillac. The Ford/JBL system is now also available in other Ford and Mercury models, including the Taurus and Sable. The Ford/JBL system, initially offered only with Lincolns, matched or exceeded GM/Delco-Bose in sound quality. Not to sit idly by, two years later Ford announced its collaboration with JBL. For cars with absorbent interior fabric, there is an optional treble boost switch on the unit's back panel that can be set when the stereo is installed. On the bottom edge of the booster/equaliser are slider bars that act as controls, as well as a spatial control that alters the frequency balance and a low-frequency control that boosts or eases the bass. It also features active electronic equalisation, where the bass and treble responses are modified according to the car's interior acoustics. The Bose 1401 booster/equaliser has four separate amplifiers, each producing 25 watts.
